Diesel fuels are usually heavier than gasoline and have less volatile fractions of hydrocarbons. A diesel engine uses very high compression to cause heating and ignition (rather than a spark plug). Diesel fuels are therefore usually less explosive than gasoline. Diesel fuels are less apt to evaporate (into the atmosphere) than gasoline and may be more ecologically friendly.
